What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine that was developed in Germany by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago, and it is currently the fastest growing system of medicine in the world (1). It is based on two general theories: “like cures like”, and “the law of the minimum dose”.
“Like cures like”:
This is also called the Law of Similars, which states that a medicine can cure a sick person if it causes a similar sickness in a healthy person. For example, if you peel and chop an onion, it is likely that your eyes will begin to burn, itch, and water. You might also develop a runny nose and begin to sneeze. These symptoms are also common symptoms of allergy attacks and colds. So if you came into see a homeopath with these specific symptoms during a cold or allergy attack, he or she may prescribe you homeopathic Allium Cepa (red onion).
“The minimum dose”
This is the theory that the lower the dose of a medicine, the more powerful that medicine is. This may seem counter-intuitive at first. But think about it this way, the higher the dose of a drug, the more powerful it will be at suppressing the body’s symptoms and suppressing the natural biological processes in the body. There are many theories as to why small doses affect the human body so profoundly. Many doctors compare the way it works to the way allergy shots work: although a normal dose of your specific allergen causes symptoms of illness, tiny doses of that same substance actually stimulate the body to heal from that allergy. The way I personally choose to see it is this: we are primarily energetic beings. Therefore we respond more profoundly to energetic stimuli than we do to physical stimuli. Very small doses of medicine, when prepared homeopathically (a process of dilution and succession, or shaking), speak to the body on this more powerful energetic level instead of working on the physical level like most traditional medicines.
Symptoms tell the story:
Symptoms are the language the body uses to tell us that something is wrong. In conventional medicine, doctors only look for and recognize symptoms that support a particular diagnosis. This is because they are treating the disease specifically. But in homeopathy, we use all of the patient’s symptoms so that we can treat the person who is sick. In this way, we can find the best matching remedy that will then stimulate the individual to heal themselves. This means that while there may be only one or two medicines that will treat a specific disease using the conventional approach, there may be 20 or more homeopathic remedies for that same disease.
Let’s use an example to help this make sense. Perhaps your whole family has dinner at the same restaurant and everyone develops food poisoning. You were all exposed to the same pathogenic bacteria, and using the conventional approach, you all have the exact same disease. But most likely, a detailed description of everyone’s individual symptoms will reveal significant differences. Mom may have nausea that is completely relieved after vomiting, while Dad’s nausea is not. Mom may describe her stomach pain as burning, while Dad experiences it as a dull ache. Additionally, the child may report being cold and clammy, while the parents feel hot and sweaty. All three people have food poisoning, but each one will require a different homeopathic remedy because they are experiencing the disease differently.
Why I love homeopathy:
I love homeopathy because when you get the right remedy, the results are astounding. In my clinical and also personal experiences, homeopathy has been the catalyst for all of the most dramatic and profound healings I have had the honor to be a part of. While conventional medicine treats disease and all the symptoms that disease comes with, homeopathy treats the sick person individually. This may seem like a subtle difference at first, but it is actually profound. By treating the person, you can stimulate that person’s body to begin healing itself. I would have never discovered homeopathy if I hadn’t of had my own health problems and tried almost everything else first. But the beauty of doing it that way was that I got to personally experience the difference between having my symptoms “band-aided” by conventional treatment, and then feeling what it was like have my body literally wake up and start healing itself. While there is a time and a place for drugs and palliative treatment, after experiencing its effects personally, I will always have a special love for homeopathy.
